Green Mountain Trail

About the trail

FOUR DAYS OF LUXURY SLACKPACKING

THE GREEN MOUNTAIN TRAIL IS A FOUR DAY HIKING TRAIL AROUND THE GROENLANDBERG (GREEN MOUNTAIN) IN THE OVERBERG REGION OF THE WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA.

Traversing a tapestry of fynbos and fruit farms this slackpack trail offers fine food and farm stays in the Elgin and Bot River Valleys of South Africa. Accommodation is at four-star graded (TGCSA) Wildekrans Country House. Delicious , wholesome meals are provided throughout.

The trail meanders around the Groenlandberg, part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. Guided by passionate and FGASA accredited guides you learn about the biodiversity and the history of the area. Immersing oneself in this protected natural environment is a game changer for both body and soul.

The Green Mountain Trail is a moderate walking trail with distances varying between 11kms and 18kms each day. The effort level, as gauged by Slackpacker South Africa, is set at 3.5, on a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 being the most difficult.

The trail traverses privately owned land. All landowners are members of the Groenlandberg Conservancy, the world’s first biodiversity wine route, and the region’s leader in efforts to conserve the environment and promote responsible tourism.

The wine farms we journey through are Biodiversity Wine Initiative champions. This enlightened initiative unites conservation and agricultural development in a complementary, mutually beneficial manner. As part of the Green Mountain Trail’s social responsibility programme, hikers are encouraged to “Walk with an Alien,” a project in which a personalised walking stick is carved from alien vegetation by local communities.

The slackpacking experience at Wildekrans is unparallelled... We've done the weekend Green Mountain Trail. The groups are kept small and it's wionderful to bond with fellow hikers over a the few days of exquisitely curated program. Alison, our host, has created an unforgettable experience where everything just flows - hiking with such experienced and friendly guides, tasting famed Elgin valley wines, indulging in home made quisine, relaxing by the pool, savouring a massage in the comfort of your room... the 2.5 days flew by but at the same time felt like full and satisfying 2 weeks od rest!

Whispers of the Green Mountain: A Poetic Review - 22 March 2025
Beneath the endless Cape sky, where the air hums with ancient stories, The Green Mountain Trail unfolds—a ribbon of wonder through time. Soft earth cradles each step, weaving past fynbos in whispered bloom, As towering peaks stand watch, guardians of an untamed paradise. The morning mist dances, a silver veil over the Elgin Valley, Where orchards spill their golden fruit, kissed by the sun’s gentle gaze. Streams murmur secrets to the wind, tracing paths through emerald slopes, While proteas flame like silent torches, guiding weary souls home. This is a journey not measured in miles, but in breathless awe— A pilgrimage through nature’s cathedral, where silence sings. The Green Mountain Trail is not merely walked; it is felt, Etched into memory like the mountain’s own steadfast embrace

Treat yourself to the beautiful Green Mountain Trail - 22 October 2024
There are not enough words to describe the natural beauty we encountered on the Green Mountain Trail. The trail itself is challenging in parts, but incredibly diverse and no two days were the same. Our exceptionally knowledgeable guides, Andreas and Patrick, were absolute gems. Special-surprise packed breakfasts and snacks made the pit-stops really enjoyable. Overall, a well organised, carefully and thoughtfully curated trail which I would highly recommend to anyone with a sense of adventure and wonderment at our natural environment.
