Four days of luxury slackpacking
The Green Mountain Trail is a four day hiking trail around the Groenlandberg (Green Mountain) in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, South Africa.
Traversing a tapestry of fynbos and fruit farms this slackpack trail offers fine food and farm stays in the Elgin and Bot River Valleys of South Africa. Accommodation is at four-star graded (TGCSA) Wildekrans Country House. Delicious , wholesome meals are provided throughout.
The trail meanders around the Groenlandberg, part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. Guided by passionate and FGASA accredited guides you learn about the biodiversity and the history of the area. Immersing oneself in this protected natural environment is a game changer for both body and soul.
The Green Mountain Trail is a moderate walking trail with distances varying between 11kms and 18kms each day. The effort level, as gauged by Slackpacker South Africa, is set at 3.5, on a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 being the most difficult.
The trail traverses privately owned land. All landowners are members of the Groenlandberg Conservancy, the world’s first biodiversity wine route, and the region’s leader in efforts to conserve the environment and promote responsible tourism.
The wine farms we journey through are Biodiversity Wine Initiative champions. This enlightened initiative unites conservation and agricultural development in a complementary, mutually beneficial manner. As part of the Green Mountain Trail’s social responsibility programme, hikers are encouraged to “Walk with an Alien,” a project in which a personalised walking stick is carved from alien vegetation by local communities.

What people say about the Green Mountain Trail
Over a special three day version of the Green Mountain Trail, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of fellow walkers from Germany, Iran and Canada – strangers before we started, now friends with a shared experience. We learnt more about Fynbos in our three days of hiking with our guide, Jeff Groenewald, than in thirty years of hiking in the region with no more than a book in hand. Jeff had the happy knack of imparting interesting facts in a manner that was both informative and entertaining. He was ably assisted by Patrick whose ever smiling encouragement and back pack of wonderous breakfasts was enough to get us up all the hills even in temperatures in the mid 30s. And I haven’t mentioned the wine tasting, the delicious meals or the comfortable, friendly surroundings of our base at Wildekrans Country House! All in all a wonderful experience that was good for the soul as well as the heart and lungs.
Having done the Blue mountain trail, I was very happy that Andy joined me to do the 4 day Green mountain trail, leaving and returning each day to the comfort of Wildekrans Country House, where the superb and friendly team see to your every need, and serve up fantastic meals at every sitting.
We had a small group of 5 hikers, lead by Andreas and pushed from behind by Patrick, two highly knowledgeable, experienced and such fun guides, they made the trip… sharing their passion for this mountain, it’s geology, it’s wildlife and it’s trees… as well as carrying most of our daily food rations.
Having Alison coordinating each day’s walk from Wildekrans allowed us to navigate a week of rain and storms, seldom seen in the Cape at this time of the year! This focus and flexibility meant we had a magical and fair weather walk each day, with the cloud and inclement weather affecting neither the views nor our enjoyment.
We will certainly be back, to visit the House, the team, as well as the majestic mountains.
A fantastic 4 days spent hiking. Great food & accommodation with well thought out routes and timing. Thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. We had amazing weather which helped a lot.
