Cape South Coast, Walker bay district, Botriver Ward

Swartrivier road, just off the N2 between Botrivier and Caledon

Gabriëlskloof is the realisation of a dream for businessman Bernhard Heyns, who searched for several years to find the unique piece of land that would capture his heart – and enable him to grow vines and make his own wines. He went the adventurous route of seeking out ‘virgin’ land with optimum soils and climatic conditions that had not been planted to vineyards, in order to be able to grow his vines as virus free as possible. He found this with the help of Barry Anderson, and in 2001, Bernhard became the owner of a portion of the farm Avontuur, soon to be renamed for its original owner in 1860, Gabriël le Roux.

Careful soil analysis and consultation with top viticultural experts meant vines were planted according to what nature prescribed, not the other way around. After the vineyards were planted (between 2002 and 2007), olive trees and a little lavender were added to complete the picture. Right at the start it was decided that a section of the farm (about 53 hectares) would be dedicated to fynbos and extensive removal of alien vegetation took place between 2005 and 2008. Well-known wine maker Kobie Viljoen was appointed in 2008, and produced his first vintage at Gabriëlskloof in 2009.

Our restaurant, deli and tasting room opened to the public in September 2009, and guests have been thrilled to discover the delight of true Overberg hospitality that underlies every detail here, and spend lazy afternoons on our stoep or sipping some Shiraz in front of the huge fireplaces.

Trading hours:
Restaurant open seven days a week, 9am to 5pm
Tasting room open from 9am to 5pm weekdays, and 10am to 2pm on weekends.
Please note: Our Restaurant closes for three weeks in May 2012 (from 14 May to 7 June) for some much needed rest and some minor renovations. The tasting room will still be open during this time, serving homemade soups and bread, and local cheese platters.

The world’s first biodiversity wine route and eco route

The Green Mountain Eco Route, the world’s first biodiversity wine route, incorporates the area around the Groenland Mountain with the villages Bot River (Botrivier), Elgin Valley, Grabouw, Houw Hoek and Villiersdorp in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Just one hour from Cape Town, the route is ideally located for weekend getaways and easily accessible via the N2 past Cape Town International Airport and Sir Lowry’s Pass. For those travelling further to the Garden Route and Route 62, the area makes a great first stop in the Overberg, South Africa.

The Green Mountain Eco Route combines attractions including wine farms, activities, events, accommodations, restaurants, wedding & conference venues. It offers scenic beauty, natural diversity of terroir and a wide range of wine styles. Whether you want to crank uphill on your mountain bike, hike through acres of fynbos, experience a unique wine tasting with the winemakers, or enjoy meals made from locally grown produce, the Green Mountain Eco Route has things to do for everyone.
About the Green Mountain Eco Route   Our Trails
Biodiversity refers to the various systems and processes that allow life to persist over time. When biodiversity is intact, species and ecosystems are resilient and adaptive to environmental changes. But when biodiversity is lost, nature responds unpredictably and natural resources may be destroyed.

The Green Mountain Eco Route exposes visitors to both the wine and the biodiversity experience of each participating producer, promoting responsible eco-friendly tourism in harmony with nature.
